Paper electrophoretic studies of glycoproteins in rheumatic fever.

چکیده
TmCLASSIC REPORT by Longsworth et at. (1) in 1939 on serum protein fractionation by free electrophoresis included rheumatic fever as one of the febrile diseases that had been studied. Employing the same medium, Rutstein et at. (2) followed this work with a more detailed study of serum proteins in rheumatic fever and noted changes in total protein and gamma globulin concentrations. Shetlar and co-workers (3-5) employed chemical analytic technics in studies of serum polysaccharides in rheumatoid diseases and found significant changes in these conditions. In the comprehensive study of Kuhns and Crittenden (6), involving paper electrophoretic fractionation of serum proteins, glycoproteins, and lipoproteins in rheumatoid arthritis and associated rheumatoid diseases, a similarity was noted in the serum-glycoprotein patterns of rheumatoid arthritis and rheumatic fever. Subsequent work by Salt (7), Sunderman and Sunderman (8), and Stidworthy et at. (9) with serum protein and glycoprotein fractionation has resulted in the consensus that, in rheumatoid arthritis, serum proteins show decreased albumin with increased alpha-2 and gamma globulin fractions. Glycoprotein changes in rheumatoid arthritis and rheumatic fever were most marked by increased alpha-i and alpha-2 globulins (9). A review of the studies to date shows that most investigations have been focused on serum-protein changes encountered in rheumatoid arthritis and allied diseases. Consequently, it was felt that a study of serum glycoproteins in individuals diagnosed as having rheumatic fever might supply additional information of interest on the subject.

A Case Report of Recurrent Rheumatic Fever: Considerations and Comments
Rheumatic fever (RF) is a prevalent healthcare problem in the developing countries. Recurrence of this disorder is often observed in childhood and adolescence. RF can mimic the presentations of infective endocarditis, and clinicians are not really familiar with this issue. Herein, we present a case of recurrent acute rheumatic fever in a patient suspicious of acute bacterial endocarditis due to...

Introduction: Acute rheumatic fever is an autoimmune disease that mainly affects the large joints. Early treatment of a throat infection following group A streptococcus prevents of acute rheumatic fever. Given the low prevalence of the disease, especially in a situation where there is excessive use of antibiotics in Iran, this study intends to report a patient with Acute rheumatic fever with mi...

OBJECTIVE To measure antibody titres to cardiac, nuclear, and streptococcal antigens in different groups of rheumatic fever (n = 60) and control subjects (n = 80) with the aim of identifying cross reactive antigens of potential laboratory diagnostic value. METHODS Enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), immunocytochemical, and electrophoretic techniques were used to measure titres of anti...

A total of70 children aged 6 to 15 years with rheumatic fever and completed in-hospital data were reviewed from 19XX to 1993. In 5X.6% of patients this was the first attack of disease, while in 41.4'10 the episode represented a recurrence. Noncompliance of antimicrobial prophylaxis was noted in all of the subjects with recurrences. 61.4% of cases gave a previous history of sore throat, and ...
